A story, or rather a feeling I’ve been carrying inside myself and in my photo archive for the past 2 years.<\/em><\/p>\n

A brief encounter with two western tourists fleeing Hua Lamphong (Bangkok, Thailand) train station with utter disgust in their eyes. Everywhere around them \u2013 the undesirables, the bums, and the addicts.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stepped inside.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

revolt!
\ndisgust!
\nall encompassing fear.
\ndistorting the creamy,
\npale
\nand white,
\necologically and ethically
\nnurtured skin
\nof the world citizens
\nploughing through their oriental dream
\nbackpack, battery pack and camelback
\ntheir armour,
\ntriple-lens camera
\ntheir filter.<\/p>\n

Eyes and mouths wide open
\nadrenaline flowing
\nthrough tanned, sexy thighs
\nfleeing past the infested,
\nrunning back to the civilized.
\nTo the inspirational,
\nunbeaten paths,
\nchronicled, advertised and harvested by
\nThe Influencer<\/p>\n

Scandalous!
\nHow dare they!
\ntrash the shiny clean marble floors
\nof colonial architecture
\noccupy the window sills
\nopenly display
\ntheir revolting faces
\ntheir infections
\ntheir meth-eaten teeth
\ntheir deformed children
\ntheir flea-infested clothes
\ntheir mental disorders
\ntheir humility.<\/p>\n

How dare they!
\nthe scum
\nthe addicts
\nthe loonies
\nand the bums.
\nBack home
\nwe would take care
\ninstitutionalize
\nhospitalize
\nmedicate
\nand incarcerate.
\nClean up
\nand disinfect
\nthem
\nshiny marble floors.<\/p>\n

Just a few more meters
\na few more panic sighs
\ntill the soft couch of a nearby ecocafe
\nwill soothe and embrace,
\nthe trained fake smiles
\nwill wash the discomfort away.
\n“Ethiopia cold-press, please.
\nWith silicon oats,
\nserved
\non an artisanal tattoo napkin,
\nplease”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,
\nThe Scum
\nare tucking their kids
\ninto yesterday’s news
\nwords comfort, words embrace.
\nThe lucky
\namong the forgotten
\nfind colonial walls to lean on
\nunlit spots to hide in.<\/p>\n

The night is falling
\non floors of marble
\non people dispossesed.
\nEven the uniformed
\nvultures with badges
\nseize circling round,
\npause kicking the scum into
\nlaw and order.<\/p>\n

His majesty
\nThe King of Orgies the VIII’th
\ncalmly observes his subjects
\nsafely fenced away with flower petals,
\nlulled to his royal sleep
\nby cleaners
\nvacuuming his altar.
\nAs alive as a statue
\nas real as a fable
\nas rich
\nas all his subjects were
\nprior to his invention.<\/p>\n

I steal a few shameful shots
\nlike a royal
\nfeeding on misery.
\n“3rd class ticket South, please”
\nI need the wind
\nof those open train wagons
\nto blast the stench
\nof those royal petals
\naway
\nto rejuvenate me.<\/p>\n

I must get it all out,
\nI want to honour The Scum
\nto finally give them the love
\nI’ve carried and nurtured
\nsince disembarking the train
\nin Hua Lamphong
\non that steamy monsoon night
